Applying to BMTM:

The Black Mountain Tailgate Market is a producer-only member-run market with 20 member vendors and a community-led board of directors. The market hosts over 100 local vendors and collaborating nonprofit organizations, serving an average of more than 1,500 market-goers each Saturday morning. We enter our 2026 season following a year of extraordinary community momentum. In 2025, our market was honored as #1 Farmers Market in North Carolina and #7 in the United States through the America’s Farmers Market Celebration - recognition driven by the dedication of our vendors, growers, makers, musicians, volunteers, and shoppers.

This year, we are delighted to feature:

  • Spring & Holiday Markets
  • SNAP & SNAP incentives
  • A dedicated Social Media Manager
  • A Community Collaborator Corner for local Non-profit Organizations
  • Live local music
  • Art Activations and activities
  • Culinary demonstrations and tastings
  • Children's activities and Booth Space for Youth Entrepreneurs!

With an array of locally grown produce, humanely raised proteins, artisan goods, and a myriad of local artists and makers, we are proud to bring the finest and freshest foods and the friendliest faces together for an early start to the season...in the Heart of Black Mountain. Youth Entrepreneurs

The Little Seed Program, launched in 2023, is BMTM’s youth development initiative designed to nurture creativity, confidence, and early entrepreneurial skills. At the heart of the program is our Youth Entrepreneur experience, which allows young makers and growers to run their own small businesses within the market.

Youth Entrepreneurs gain real-world experience by creating and selling their own handmade or grown products, interacting with customers, managing inventory, and practicing pricing and basic math skills. This hands-on approach helps young participants build confidence, communication skills, and a deeper understanding of how small businesses operate - all within a supportive, community-centered market environment.
Youth Entrepreneurs are scheduled on a rolling basis, the first and last Saturdays of each month, from March to November, and each market day in December. Spaces are limited.

Youth Entrepreneur Eligibility

To participate as a Youth Entrepreneur, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Participants must be between the ages of 6 and 18.
  • Youth must reside in Buncombe or McDowell counties to be considered for scheduling.
  • Products offered must be handmade or grown by the Youth Entrepreneur.
  • Youth Entrepreneurs must follow all general vendor rules and the BMTM Code of Conduct.

Community Collaborators

Farmers markets serve as community gathering spaces that support not only local farmers and producers, but also nonprofit organizations working to strengthen regional well-being. The Black Mountain Tailgate Market (BMTM) is committed to supporting community-based initiatives that align with our mission to promote vibrant local food systems, public health, education, the arts & humanities, and sustainable agriculture.

One of BMTM’s core goals is to provide a highly trafficked platform for nonprofit organizations to engage directly with the public. The Community Collaborator Program exists to offer visibility, outreach opportunities, and meaningful connections between community organizations and market visitors. This space is supported by BMTM and our devoted Sponsors to ensure accessibility for organizations doing vital community work.

Eligibility Requirements

To participate as a Community Collaborator, organizations must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a nonprofit organization officially recognized by the State of North Carolina and verifiable through appropriate state or federal documentation.
  • Must complete and submit the Community Collaborator Application Form.
  • Understand that participation is scheduled based on availability and on a rolling basis until capacity is reached.
  • Understand and adhere to BMTM's Community Collaborator Policies.
  • Understand that response times may take up to 14 days due to scheduling volume.
Community Collaborators are expected to support and promote their presence at the Black Mountain Tailgate Market through social media, newsletters, or other outreach efforts.

Fees & Donations

BMTM is committed to ensuring equitable access for organizations providing essential services.

No Community Collaborator fee is required for nonprofit organizations whose primary mission focuses on:

  • Food access and food security
  • Disaster relief
  • Medical care or health education
  • Public health awareness and community wellness
(Examples include FEMA, the American Red Cross, food access or health-focused nonprofits.)

Exceptions may be granted on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of BMTM.
